It has long been held as a main competitor to Lightroom and has an excellent array of features. All very frustrating as it's so close to being at least a part replacement for LR for my way of working.ON1 Photo RAW 2020 is one of the main competitors in the post-processing industry. I realised yesterday that it also lacks LR's metadata filtering. LR's a bit sluggish at times but according to friends with later PCs or iMacs, that's normal.Īs I said, I do really like the tone and 'feel' of ON1's RAW processing but the dragging lag, loss of keywords and random disappearance of thumbnails is a pity. It's generally performed well for me though it's beginning to show its age e.g. OS drive = Kingston SSD, Data drive = Toshiba 2TB HDD Intel Core i7 4790K 4.00GHz Haswell 22nm Technology To get it back into what I considered a working condition required a bit of hardware and software TLC. I picked up the PC three years ago, second hand, from a VR enthusiast who'd had it custom built two, possibly three years before that and it was a bit of a powerhouse in its day. This makes it easier to understand how cataloged folders work and hides stuff that can get in your way. This gives you 80% of On1 editor without the browser issues. For example it doesn't support image stacks It has some photoshop layers function, but it's very limited. it's an adequate browser/editor as long as you don't rely or use it's catalog. I also verified the above with On1 Support. The test machine was a iMac with 32G Ram and a very very fast SSD. Using Cataloged folders/albums with external drives fails badly when you don't have the drive connected. The Cataloged folder and 'smart' albums still impact overall machine performance due to frequent scanning of your hard drive or networked folders. Some things are improved, but browsing and editing are still slow when compared to Lightroom or Bridge.
